Eating disorders are very tricky. They can manifest in very different ways but one of the most common things is having a sense of control. The sense of control is common in people who suffer from anorexia or bulimia. If they feel like their life around them is out of control, then they may turn to control their body and weight as a way of having control.
Learning how to let go of this control over your body is the first step of moving forward in recovering from anorexia or bulimia. Here are some tips that you should start to work on if you are in the process of going through recovery. Letting go should be a common theme in your life as you work through your recovery.

  • Let go of your scale. There is no reason to have a scale in your house if you are recovering from an eating disorder. This will only create more obsession with your body and weight. So go out in your yard and take a hammer to it!
  • Let go of clothes that don’t fit your healthy body. You may have certain clothes that only fit you when you were sick. Holding onto these can be extremely triggering so it is best to just get rid of them. Think of it as making space for your new mindset and healthier body. This can also be an opportunity to go out and purchase a new wardrobe for yourself!
  • Let go of toxic friendships. Distancing yourself from people who do not create a healthy environment for you is important. It is YOUR recovery, not anyone else’s. Sometimes this means moving on from friendships that don’t put your health as a priority.
  • Let go of fear. Recovery is not easy and it is scary as hell. Accept that it is going to take work and keep moving forward.
  • Let go of keeping secrets. Your ED has/is probably been the biggest secret you are trying to keep or have been trying to keep. It is time to let go of keeping it a secret. It is time to seek out support and to let people in your life who want the best for you.
