Best Apps to Promote Mental Health

Published On: March 3, 2021Categories: Fitness, Mental Health, Wellness

Smartphones are everywhere these days and offer a variety of apps to make our lives easier, from rideshare apps to apps that allow us to order grocery delivery. There are also a variety of apps you can download and use to improve your mental health. Today, millions of Americans struggle with mental illness, from depression to anxiety – in 2019 alone, 20.6 percent of U.S. adults experienced mental illness, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. If you’re dealing with a disorder, you’re not alone.

Tapestry has compiled a list of some of our favorite apps that treat various aspects of your mental health, from therapy to physical exercise apps to peer support services. It’s important to note that while many are free, some require in-app purchases to gain access to additional features.

Mindfulness/Meditation

  • Calm: Currently ranked as Apple’s top app in health and fitness, Calm is designed to help users practice mindfulness and many individuals rely on it to help with sleep issues. Offering meditation programs, movement exercises, and relaxing soundtracks, Calm has something for everyone.
  • Headspace: This wellness app offers programs to help users meditate, sleep better, and focus. They also have mindful eating features and has been officially endorsed by the Anxiety and Depression Association of America for its effectiveness in treating mental disorders.
  • Insight Timer: Individuals searching for meditation options can trust this app, which comes with 70,000 free guided meditations, some of which are narrated by celebrities. They also offer other audio elements like bedtime stories and soundtracks to help you sleep or relieve stress.

Exercise

  • MyFitnessPal: This free app can track both your exercise routine and personal diet plan to determine your calorie intake to help users become more aware of their eating habits. You can even scan the barcodes of your food items and log your exercise by exploring the app’s massive exercise database.
  • Daily Yoga: If you’re interested in pairing exercise with mindfulness, Daily Yoga offers 70 yoga programs with more than 500 flows. There’s a two-week program for beginners and a community platform so you can connect with other experts and yogis.
  • Couch to 5K Runner: Want to set a running goal but aren’t sure how to get there? This app is designed to help amateur runners get in shape and lose weight in 8 weeks and has helped 4.2 million people reach their goals.

Journaling

  • Day One Journal: This app allows you to import personal photos, tag your locations, and edit captions so you can digitize your best memories with loved ones and recall them whenever you wish—a great way to recognize milestones in your mental health journey.
  • Moodnotes: This app is like a journal for your moods and emotions that allows you to keep track of how you’re feeling day by day. The app even allows you to explore why you may be feeling negative and gives you tips on how to avoid falling into similar bad habits.
  • Daylio: Want to record your days but don’t have the time or energy to write? This app allows you to simply pick your daily mood and select the activities you’ve done that day. The app also analyzes your moods so you can view your average mood.

There are countless other apps on the market you can find, and we recommend doing your research so you can find the right app for your individual needs. However, if your mental disorder is impairing your ability to live a healthy life or you’re also struggling with an eating disorder or substance abuse disorder, we recommend you seek professional help from a center like Tapestry.
